A huge congratulations to Yasmeen Noor de Villiers in grade 12 who won the Silver Award at the 2019 Applications Olympiad. This is the fourth time that Islamia College has had a learner representing the school in the finals in the past six years. Our learners have always done exceptionally well in the finals and there was no doubt that Yasmeen would make the school proud, and she did so excellently! Yasmeen visited the USA a few years ago and was involved in a robotics course at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This has inspired her to pursue studying Computer Science at UCT once she matriculates.
Congratulations are extended to Yasmeen as just reaching the finals is a fantastic achievement. They make up the best out of 5 530 who competed in two school-based rounds earlier this year. We thank her support system, teachers, family and friends, who motivated and encouraged her to work hard to achieve this award. The 12 finalists had the privilege of being guided by UCT Information Systems Departments lecturer, Gwamaka Mwalemba, who gave them insight on the courses available in the Information Sciences. Computer Olympiad manager, Mr Michael Cameron, mentioned that ‘a key goal of the Computer Olympiads is to stimulate high school learners to equip themselves to participate in the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa’. We look forward to seeing more great from Yasmeen in the future.
